It resolves a critical security issue related to user accounts in Airtime versions 1.6.0 to 2.5.1. However, web servers that are hosting single Airtime installations are not affected.

Another security enhancement in this release is that the administration interface is accessed over https by default, using the method described in the Airtime manual.

In the last minor release, 2.5.1, Airtime improved the reliability of program scheduling with linked shows, and added important bugfixes to station and user timezone handling.

Introducing Airtime's website theme: Broadcaster

Working on new features for The Scope radio station, based at Ryerson University, the Airtime team have been working closely with our Newscoop theme developers to offer a brand new Broadcaster theme. This theme is customised for radio broadcasters and offers Airtime users even more functionality and control for a full online radio experience. The design is based on our popular Newscoop theme, Rockstar, designed by Stephanie Miebach and Christian Kobben. One of the distinctive features of this theme is how it integrates Airtime widgets for weekly schedules and HTML5 audio playback.

<div class="cs_img"style="width:600px;">

The Program Grid in Broadcaster features the radio program schedule integrated in the web design

You can find out more about Broadcaster:

On our theme page

Play around with the demo

Check out the GitHub page

Airtime 2.5.0 introduced custom logging

The last major release, Airtime 2.5.0, enabled playout logging in the exact format you require and the ability to export that data in CSV or PDF file formats. This is a great feature for professional radio stations who need an organised (digital) paper trail. Advertisers and stakeholders, the DJ community and listeners benefit from having easy access to detailed playout history in formats that are easy to share forward.

Template customisation makes data broadcast ready

The playout history templates can be customized to comply with the broadcasting regulations in your country. This feature also enables you to see playback statistics on each file and show in your library. That data can be edited manually, for corrections or logging of analogue sources.

Airtime is open source broadcast automation, playout and scheduling software.

Download Airtime 2.5.1a for free!

No server? Known as Gimme API, it can fetch content like Newscoop articles, organise them (in featured article lists, or by sections and topic), and then be displayed as widgets on any site (here's how). Users' data can be served as well (like email addresses or biographical information). Future development will allow data to be pushed into Newscoop via write services.

Speaking your language

There's been a real focus on Arabic-language sites in the run-up to this release. We celebrated the launch of two amazing new sites in Yemen and Sudan (Yemen's Women Power and Al-Taghyeer). The team have also localized the entire Newscoop interface, and our amazing community contributed to translating the Newscoop user manual. Many thanks to Cullen Reddy and Mohamed Essam for the Arabic localization, and Elene Margvelashvili for the Georgian localization.

Plugins system

We've included an early version of the redesigned Newscoop plugins system with this release. This will allow people to build plugins for everything from paywalls to polls. The new plugin system is based on Symfony Bundles so we are now able to use Packagist to maintain and update our plugins. This allows for more flexibility and better community integration in Newscoop. Want to make a plugin? Log Summary produces a chronological view of all past content. File Summary allows you to choose a period of time and call specific meta-data about those files. Show Summary brings up data relating to particular show slots in your programming. With all history views you have the ability to modify and manually add data to your playout history.

Support for Ubunto 13.10

Airtime 2.5.0 also features experimental support for the newly released Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander), and we welcome feedback on it.

What else can you expect to find in the latest release?

Shows on three or four-week rotation, in addition to existing weekly and monthly options

Fetch schedule data for next week via the API, not just the current week

Several important timezone handling improvements

Rebroadcast shows bugfix

Reduce likelihood of playout stalls under high memory pressure

Fixed calendar not loading sometimes

Fixed webstream disconnections due to Now Playing page

Prevent account password changes in demo mode

Plus dozens of other bugfixes!

Don't forget, Airtime Pro now offers unlimited streaming for just $49.95 a month.

airtime releases Wed, 23 Oct 2013 15:28:26 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/airtime/release/1999 Airtime 2.4.1 improves mono file playout, Liquidsoap input and playout engine lock http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/airtime/release/1975

<div class="cs_img"style="width:600px;">

The wave form editor, one of the latest features in Airtime 2.4

Airtime 2.4.1 introduces improvements that focus on the playout engine lock, Liquidsoap input and the ability to play mono files.

Many Airtime users often wish to play mono files, and up until recently this was not possible. With the release of 2.4.1 you can now add these files to your playlists with ease!

As well, the Airtime team has been working hard to make sure the gears that run Airtime, like the playout engine and the Liquidsoap input are working in top notch condition. With this minor release you can expect much smoother playback as a result of updates to these features.

Download Airtime 2.4.1 free!

No server? Crossfading between shows and tracks, plus a waveform preview that allows you to easily set cue points. Professional audio streamers will be able to make the most of the new support for AAC and Opus.

Sourcefabric's open source radio software Airtime allows radio stations to be programmed and streamed through an easy web interface and can be downloaded and installed on GNU/Linux platforms like Ubuntu and Debian, or used via Sourcefabric's web-hosted Airtime Pro service.

Crossfades and waveform preview

Crossfading has been high on our community wishlist for some time, and now it's here. The global crossfade setting allows you to determine a default crossfade between tracks. In the media builder you'll find the waveform preview, a visual way to look at a track's audio and easily set cue and fade points without guessing at where a track should start and end.

Take a look at our screencast that shows exactly how this new function works.

AAC and Opus support

Airtime now has AAC and Opus codec support. Streaming with these codecs offers improvements to the quality or latency of incoming webstreams or your outgoing broadcast stream. AAC generally achieves better sound quality than MP3 at similar bitrates, while Opus benefits from much lower latency than other formats like MP3 or OGG, but competes favourably for quality at similar bitrates. See more on using Opus with Airtime here, or take a look at our unofficial support for the new breed of AAC+ streaming on the wiki.

Show linking and repeating

We added some great improvements for those who create a lot of dynamic playlists: show linking. When multiple shows are linked, content that is scheduled in one show is scheduled in the others as well. By creating a dynamic playlist in one show and linking it, the playlist will be dynamically generated every time.

We've also improved repeats. Monthly repeating shows can now be scheduled by day of the month (e.g. every second Monday), instead of simply by a numerical calendar date.

Check out our screencast on this new feature.

Here is a list of some of the other new features and fixes from the major release of Airtime 2.4, the highlights of which are...

New columns in library table indicate whether a track is scheduled and whether it's in a playlist

Library view can expand to entire screen

Don't forget, Airtime Pro now offers unlimited streaming for just $49.95 a month.

Download Airtime 2.4.1 free!

No server? Crossfading between shows and tracks has been added, plus a waveform preview that allows you to easily set cue points.

Download Airtime 2.4 free!

No server? The global crossfade setting allows you to determine a default crossfade between tracks. In the media builder you'll find the waveform preview, a visual way to look at a track's audio and easily set cue and fade points without guessing at where a track should start and end.

Take a look at our screencast that shows exactly how this new function works.

AAC and Opus support

Airtime now adds AAC and Opus codec support. Streaming with these codecs can offer improvements to the quality or latency of incoming webstreams or your outgoing broadcast stream.

Great improvement for those who create a lot of dynamic playlists: show linking.

Here is a list of some of the other new features and fixes in Airtime 2.4, the highlights of which are...

New columns in library table indicate whether a track is scheduled and whether it's in a playlist

Library view can expand to entire screen

Don't forget, Airtime Pro now offers unlimited streaming for just $49.95 a month.

Download Airtime 2.4 free!

Build your own theme (or use a free one)

Aside from having one great looking new theme, Quetzal, we've updated Rockstar and The New Custodian themes to be fully responsive and stable. We've also overhauled our theme-builders Cookbook. Inside this you will find our new easy to use design theme called, The Stun. This is a great resource for novice designers. Now designing your own news site theme is as easy as coding basic HTML and the Cookbook offers lots of practical and more advanced tips on how to stand out from the crowd. There are more ready-made themes for Newscoop 4.2 over in the gallery.

What's more, we've been experimenting with accessible design. Using W3C-validated HTML/CSS, recently relaunched Kobinet showcases the ability to run a website with Newscoop while fulfilling all the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Check out our handy guide.

Plenty of improvements

Way too many bug-fixes and code improvements to list here, but expect to notice improvements with...

Now many backend strings are localized

Fixed the ability to send fast replies on comments

Localized slideshow buttons

Fixed duplicating comments bug

Theme sample sites have been updated with new bigger retina ready images

The article topics have a new route - :language/topic/:id/[:topicName]

There is a new look in the users management page

Now you can configure the 'contact email' and 'email from' address in the system preferences

We've also updated some new tricks that prevent spam in comments

Download Newscoop 4.2 free!

newscoop releases Mon, 10 Jun 2013 13:38:28 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1883 German and Georgian community drives Newscoop 4.1.2 bug fix release http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1847

<div class="cs_img"style="width:600px;">

Newscoop 4.1.2 out today! | Photo credit Flickr Sourcefabric (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)

Newscoop 4.1.2 is out today and features various improvements and bug fixes that build on the image-handling improvements that came with the last release. Communities can now localize the interface themselves too. Here's how.

In addition to this, multiple bug fixes have improved editing, versions, groups and publishing. The release also coincides with a release of Objavi 2.5, the software that converts Booktype books from their native HTML into PDF for printing. It's now more stable, quicker and less resource-intensive. Future releases will unveil a cover manager and better support for producing ebooks.

Check out Booktype on GitHub.

Dive into the Objavi code.

How does Booktype help publishers?

By facilitating editing and translation and eliminating the need for wikis, cumbersome CMSes, or e-mailed word processor files, Booktype aims to promote and encourage the kind of collaborative writing process employed by South Africa’s Siyavula, who use it as a community hub for over 1000 teachers across South Africa to share class notes and to collaboratively write textbooks.

Other early adopters include YouCanPrint.it who aim to be Italy’s first print-on-demand service able to offer authors the possibility to write, publish, and distribute books on one platform. Booktype enabled Internews to produce How To Bypass Internet Censorship, a 300-page book now available in nine languages, in five days. The 442-page Cryptoparty handbook, an internet phenomenon that was downloaded thousands of times on its release in October 2012, was written using Booktype in three days with 20 authors from remote locations worldwide.

Booktype Releases Wed, 06 Feb 2013 13:59:26 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/booktype/latestrelease/1570 Media organisations discover new Solr system with Newscoop 4.1 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1559

<div class="cs_img"style="width:600px;">

Newscoop's geolocation tools help journalists map news events in Georgia and other regions.

Newscoop, our open source news CMS, has been updated to include frontend search capabilities powered by Solr, the open source enterprise search platform used by Netflix, Instagram, SourceForge, NASA, WhiteHouse.gov and Apple. Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling. Providing distributed search and index replication, Solr is highly scalable.

Solr now allows Newscoop users, like the Georgian sites NetGazeti, newscafe.ge and TSPress, to offer faster search due to the structured filtering of results. Sites can also index new content and offer it quickly to visitors for a more relevant browsing experience. Solr can even search inside attachments (pdfs, Word documents) and display 'top hits' as a barometer of community opinion and interest - a great traffic driver and important for advertisers, writers and content syndicators.

The changelog headlines are as follows:

Integration of Apache Lucene Solr

New article-rating feature allows readers to give a rating feedback to the author which can optionally be displayed on the frontend

New Facebook Login allows journalists and editors to sign in to site backend with Facebook logins

New tags for the template engine: list_users and list_user_topics

Security fix: Unnecessary error reporting exposed on front-end templates

11 other important bug fixes

Download Newscoop 4.1 free!

newscoop releases Tue, 29 Jan 2013 12:59:59 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1559 Newscoop 4.0.4 improves comments and 3rd party library management http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1526

<div class="cs_img"style="width:600px;">
<img src="http://sourcefabric.org/get_img?ImageWidth=600&ImageId=1279" alt="Helping news organisations build better communities. However when faced with a lot of comments, journalists noticed that they experienced a problem loading the edit screen for articles.

With this latest Newscoop release there has been an improvement to this section allowing users to load more comments with a simple pagination function. The "Show more comments" button makes it much easier to read and navigate feedback from readers.

Alongside this new feature, there were a number of bug fixes related to the upgrade from the previous version, plus improvement of library handling with the use of Composer (a very cool dependency manager for PHP).

Bug fixes include...

Improved 3rd party library management by using Composer

Removes handling of include_path from application.php

Removes unnecessary use of spl auto-loading from create_themes.php upgrade script

Various exciting maintenance tasks

Some missing strings in user management mainly have been added to the localizer

What was new in Newscoop 4?

Back in April we published this series of screencasts outlining the major features in Newscoop 4. Airtime can rebroadcast incoming streams including smartphone applications and web streams from other web sites. This connection can be automatic or manual, or external streams can be scheduled in the application's calendar, as can live shows. Fading between streams is now smoother in Airtime 2.2.1 and issues with stream connection and preview have been resolved.

Airtime's new Smart Blocks have also been tweaked. Smart Blocks let DJs and Station Managers choose a block of time and fill it with audio according to parameters like genre or upload date. DJs can rebroadcast incoming streams managed by a source switcher which manually, or automatically, connects to the correct source (and fades between them). Users can configure remote live input streams from DJ programs such as Mixxx or IDJC, or smartphone applications used by broadcast journalists. Additionally, they can schedule these streams in the calendar, or schedule a 'live' show which records from the computer's line-in.

Smart Blocks.

Requested by users more than any other feature, the new Smart Blocks let users enter parameters (like genre or time last played) for a playlist and Airtime will populate that block randomly according to those conditions, before playing it out at an allotted time.

Improved library.

The library has also been overhauled, with huge performance increases on import and improved search. Users can also drag and drop tracks directly from the library into the Now Playing list to instantly edit playout on-the-fly.

Other great improvements.

WAV, FLAC and AAC support, plus ReplayGain to normalize volume output.

User ownership of files to help stations with multiple DJs

Rescan watched folders button (useful for network drives where keeping in sync is more difficult).

Stereo/mono streams.

Resources

Download, install and upgrade Airtime

Try Airtime Pro, our web-hosted version

Check out the manual to get broadcasting in minutes

airtime releases Wed, 05 Dec 2012 16:01:49 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/airtime/release/1500 Superdesk and A Verdade Winners in $1m African Media Contest with Citizen Desk http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/superdesk/latestnews/1499

<img src="http://sourcefabric.org/get_img?ImageId=1241" alt="Citizen Desk will allow citizens in Maputo to report using mobile phones. A jury of 15 international media strategists, technology innovators, and funding experts evaluated more than 500 project plans before selecting winners from a shortlist of 40 projects.

Based on open source Superdesk technology

Citizen Desk is a tool based on Sourcefabric's Superdesk software and will allow news organisations to create a mobile-optimised platform for aggregating, verifying, publishing and rewarding citizen journalism. Superdesk is a workflow and news management system and the first official implementation was used by the International Center for Journalists to cover the US election. Citizen Desk will serve as a way to incorporate citizen journalism into a news organization's core workflow.

The first phase of development of Citizen Desk will result in a finished tool that is immediately deployable in newsrooms, alongside existing CMSes with minimum installation. In order for the project to sustain itself into the future Citizen Desk will be free to download, open source and maintained, developed, documented and supported by Sourcefabric.

All the winning ANIC projects will receive cash grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, plus additional technology support from a team of four full-time developers at AMI's jAccelerator lab in Kenya, and business development support from some of the world's top media strategists affiliated with the World Association of Newspapers & News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

Peter Barron, Google's Director of External Relations for Europe, Middle East and Africa said "We want to see journalism flourish in the digital age in Africa and the African News Innovation Challenge has helped spur some really exciting projects from across the continent. We're looking forward to seeing these projects unfold and to working further with African journalists who are using technologies to gather and tell important stories."

Find out more...

Superdesk home page
Citizen Desk application
@Verdade English homepage

About @Verdade

@Verdade is a free, high quality newspaper with the estimated largest readership in Mozambique.
