Known as Gimme API, it can fetch content like Newscoop articles, organise them (in featured article lists, or by sections and topic), and then be displayed as widgets on any site (here's how). Users' data can be served as well (like email addresses or biographical information). Future development will allow data to be pushed into Newscoop via write services.

Speaking your language

There's been a real focus on Arabic-language sites in the run-up to this release. We celebrated the launch of two amazing new sites in Yemen and Sudan (Yemen's Women Power and Al-Taghyeer). The team have also localized the entire Newscoop interface, and our amazing community contributed to translating the Newscoop user manual. Many thanks to Cullen Reddy and Mohamed Essam for the Arabic localization, and Elene Margvelashvili for the Georgian localization.

Plugins system

We've included an early version of the redesigned Newscoop plugins system with this release. This will allow people to build plugins for everything from paywalls to polls. The new plugin system is based on Symfony Bundles so we are now able to use Packagist to maintain and update our plugins. This allows for more flexibility and better community integration in Newscoop. Want to make a plugin? Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling. Providing distributed search and index replication, Solr is highly scalable.

Solr now allows Newscoop users, like the Georgian sites NetGazeti, newscafe.ge and TSPress, to offer faster search due to the structured filtering of results. Sites can also index new content and offer it quickly to visitors for a more relevant browsing experience. Solr can even search inside attachments (pdfs, Word documents) and display 'top hits' as a barometer of community opinion and interest - a great traffic driver and important for advertisers, writers and content syndicators.

The changelog headlines are as follows:

Integration of Apache Lucene Solr

New article-rating feature allows readers to give a rating feedback to the author which can optionally be displayed on the frontend

New Facebook Login allows journalists and editors to sign in to site backend with Facebook logins

New tags for the template engine: list_users and list_user_topics

Security fix: Unnecessary error reporting exposed on front-end templates

11 other important bug fixes

Download Newscoop 4.1 free!

newscoop releases Tue, 29 Jan 2013 12:59:59 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1559 Newscoop 4.0.3 addresses security issue and improves media archive stability http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1504

Newscoop 4.0.3 has been released, patching a vital security issue, improving the media archive and fixing several non-critical bugs associated with topics, caching and upgrades.

Download Newscoop 4.0.3 free!

No server? It wasn't affecting all users, only some special set-ups, but it was a common problem in the forums.

2) It's now possible to correctly merge article types. It's not a widely used feature yet, an important one and we wanted to take care of it. Fixed!

3) Due to a bad SQL query, in some special cases (and for languages like Georgian), the Issues in the admin interface were disappearing. That's not good, so we fixed that pronto.

4) Due to another SQL problem (missing field in database) it was not possible to add authors to articles (or list the already attached in
case of an upgrade). It is now.

5) Saving a template in the themes manager for the first time no longer throws an Internal Server Error. Phew.

Other than that, we also took some time to make improvements to the upgrade process, improve handling of Webcodes and we pushed some other minor bug fixes. Developed and used by news organisations like Switzerland's TagesWoche, ElPeriódico de Guatemala and Yemen Times, Newscoop 4 aims to help independent news organisations manage online publications, enrich content and find new audiences.

Sourcefabric will be holding an informal press conference at the festival on Sunday 29 April at 16.00 in the Sala Priori, at Hotel Brufani. All are welcome!

Newscoop 4 now features an overhauled media archive, drag-and-drop front page management and a range of citizen journalist tools. "Newscoop 4 is built by journalists, for journalists," said Sava Tatić Managing Director at Sourcefabric. "Everything is centred around a news workflow - the new image handling, dynamic mapping tools and powerful themes are built to get stories online quickly in a way that's engaging and shareable."

With breaking news in mind, Newscoop's front page management is a drag-and-drop interface designed to make the process of designing a front page on-the-fly easy. Journalists and editors have the option of adding any article to the front page, and then moving that article around to determine where on the page it appears.

Developed alongside TagesWoche, Newscoop 4's community tools allow citizens to become an integral part of news gathering and sharing. Newscoop allows visitors to sign up for a profile, submit images and video to reporters, comment on articles and follow topics and stories as they evolve.

"We believe the times where journalists alone decide what's news are over," said co-executive editor Remo Leupin. "Today's media landscape is diverse. TagesWoche is open to the community to bring in news, discuss issues and set trends for the publication."

Newscoop 4's adaptive CSS themes means stories change in size and format to suit any browser or device. Two new themes, the New Custodian and Rock Star, offer starting points from which news sites can completely customise the form and function of their sites. Both are written in $gimme, Sourcefabric's news-centric templating language that extends the popular PHP Smarty framework.

More information: http://newscoop.sourcefabric.org

Check out the Newscoop 4 Video Lounge

Screenshots

Press Photographs

For the diary...

Newscoop 4 release: Wednesday 25 April
Newscoop 4 presentation: Sunday 29 April at 16.00 in the Sala Priori, at Hotel Brufani.

News Mon, 23 Apr 2012 14:47:18 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/community/news/1166 Newscoop 3.5.5 and Newscoop 4 RC4 security releases http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/1141

<img src="http://sourcefabric.org/get_img?ImageId=761" alt="Newscoop 4's revamped geolocation tools. "2011 was a time when the world wanted to know more about Yemen with the Arab spring and the deaths of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaqi."

Despite the technical difficulties, al-Sakkaf, who has an MSc in Information Systems Management, and her organisation, which has reporters on the ground in Sana'a, Taiz, Aden and Hodeida, were vital in reporting on the political situation in the May 2011 leadership crisis in Yemen.

"We write news in a neutral and professional way. However the world did not know," said Nadia al-Sakkaf. "In a time of technology and web 3.0 if you are not online, you don't exist. Being online is not just having a functional website, it is also about traffic and how many people read your news."

It was shortly after this in 2011 that she approached Sourcefabric, a Czech organisation specialising in open source newsrooms. The two organisations worked together to use Sourcefabric's open source content management system (CMS) Newscoop to improve interdepartmental communication via the web, build a secure and stable platform that stayed online, restore and import the news archive, and make Yemen Times content more visible on the web.

"This new website is like a rescue boat," said al-Sakkaf. "Now we are at last visible, and can recover our old database manually."

Under al-Sakkaf, the Yemen Times has published several books such as Breaking the Stereotype, a book on Yemeni women's experience as political candidates in elections. Al-Sakkaf is also looking now to broadcast news via radio with firstly an online station using Sourcefabric's open source software Airtime, and eventually creating Yemen's first independent FM station - although, until now there has been no regulation or law for broadcast media.

In 2008 the Huffington Post's Magda Abu-Fadil said of al-Sakkaf, "her stride is fast, her energy seems boundless, she seeks reforms, she's bold, she's articulate, she's young, and she has her own newspaper in Yemen to use as a platform for action."

About Yemen Times

http://www.yementimes.com

The Yemen Times is unified Yemen's first and most widely-read independent English-language newspaper. The paper is published twice-weekly (on Mondays and Thursdays) and has its own printing press, advertising associates and news service. It was founded in 1991 by Professor Abdulaziz Al-Saqqaf, a leading economist and human-rights activist, who was also its editor and publisher until he died in a traffic accident in 1999. The Yemen Times (www.yementimes.com) is among the strongest in influencing the government and in reflecting public opinion. It was the first Yemeni paper to go online in 1997.

About Sourcefabric

http://www.sourcefabric.org

Sourcefabric is established as a Czech non-profit organisation with its headquarters in Prague, branches in Berlin and Toronto, and representatives in Minsk, Guatemala, Warsaw, Belgrade and Cluj. It started life as CAMP in 1998, the new-media arm of the Media Development Loan Fund. In 2010 it launched as a wholly autonomous organisation securing private funding that propelled Sourcefabric into the ranks of one of the largest European open source projects for news and media. In 2011 they won a Knight-Batten Award for Innovation in Journalism for their work with the radio network West Africa Democracy Radio.

About Nadia al-Sakkaf

See Nadia's TED talk.

Nadia al-Sakkaf is the editor-in-chief of the Yemen Times, the most widely read English-language newspaper in Yemen. She was a speaker at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she spoke about the challenges of her job, especially as a woman, in the media and in the Arab world. Al-Sakkaf became the chief editor of the newspaper in March 2005, and has become a leading voice in Yemen and global media on issues of media, gender, development and politics. Ms. Al-Sakkaf was the first recipient of the Gebran Tueni Award in 2006, given by the World Association of Newspapers and An-Nahar Newspaper in Beirut.

News Fri, 03 Feb 2012 11:16:45 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/community/news/1054 Newscoop 4.0 Beta released with themes, community builder and article playlists http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/newscoop/latestrelease/873

A snapshot of the TagesWoche community which gained 2500 users in its first week.

Newscoop 4.0, the open source content management system for online news media, has been released in beta and is ready for testing!

Developed in close partnership with the groundbreaking online-print hybrid Swiss newspaper TagesWoche, Newscoop 4.0 builds in an all new community management feature-set, totally overhauls the look and feel of your site with Themes and adds great extra functionality for ordering, connecting and displaying articles.

As ever, beta software means we're still working on things so Newscoop 4.0 is not for production or live sites - yet. By installing, testing and reporting bugs, you can really help us to get the final version ready.

You can report bugs direct to the developers in the Newscoop forum. So... what are you waiting for?

Download Newscoop 4.0 and set up your own test site!

Once you are done, look out for these new features...

Build a community!

Newscoop now allows the construction of a fully-fledged online community - readers are able to set up accounts, manage a profile, message and follow other users, subscribe to news and topics, and comment on articles. Newscoop allows you to manage all these users and their activity, and then display them on the front page with a new activity feed widget.

Improved themes.

With Newscoop's themes, complex platforms can be redesigned with one click. They are 100% customisable and our new 2012 Theme Park will bring a whole selection of free themes to your fingertips. Newscoop's easy backup allows you to export your theme and share to any other Newscoop installation. Import, browse, delete and switch between any of the themes you've downloaded - all from the Newscoop interface.

Play with articles.

Article Playlists allow editors and journalists to easily create lists of articles and display them on the site (perfect for Articles of the Week or round-ups). With Related Articles, journalists can now 'relate' articles to other articles from the Article Edit screen, allowing connections to be made between articles regardless of the author or topic (great for features and reviews). Pending Articles gives editors instant access to a list of all articles which haven't yet been published, allowing them to manage their workload and quickly sign off stories.

Better comments.

Newscoop's overhauled comments system allows your readers to have their say, and your journalists to manage the interactions effortlessly. A clean new graphical interface allows you to easily approve, hide, delete and rate comments (plus ban the occasional miscreant). A new Feedback Messaging system also allows readers to contact journalists directly to air their view or perhaps break a new story.

We love to get feedback and are looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Superdesk's aim is to allow news organisations to build flexible, scalable newsrooms and deliver content to any available platform. Superdesk has been nominated as a finalist in the Ashoka Changemakers Citizen Media Innovation award.

The tool's core principle is "create once, publish everywhere" (COPE). Using APIs and content management, Superdesk allows newsrooms to pull in information from newswires, RSS, tools like InDesign, and social media and then output to web, mobile, radio, TV, and print. Forward planning calendars, source and data management and revenue components allow newsrooms to structure, prioritise and monetise their content.

"Superdesk's central paradigm will be the web, but it will be able to deliver on any platform, any device, anywhere, anytime," said Sava Tatić, managing director at Sourcefabric. "Flexibility is key. Rather than trying to build a tool made for everyone's newsroom, we are making a tool that everyone can build their newsroom upon."

Superdesk's lead consultant is David Brewer a media strategist who has consulted on newsrooms for Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN and ITV. "It's a dream come true for me," he said. "Superdesk could become the publication tool of choice for all who want to deliver content to multiple devices and a massive boost to the establishing of independent media."

Work on the project has already begun, with prototype features already benefiting newspapers like the new print-online hybrid TagesWoche in Switzerland. TagesWoche is using Print Desk, which brings print and online processes into one workflow, and Feed Ingest, which integrates external newswire feeds into the editorial process. Both features will make it into the first Superdesk release, due in Summer 2012.

For more information visit Sourcefabric's blogpost.

View the Ashoka Changemakers entry.

Visit the TagesWoche site.

For more information, contact Adam Thomas at Sourcefabric.

Superdesk News Wed, 09 Nov 2011 16:23:16 +0100 http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/superdesk/latestnews/801 Journalism goes open source at Mediafabric in Prague http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/community/news/785

Peter Kahler talks about WADR at Mediafabric 2011.

Mediafabric 2011 saw over 250 guests arrive from five continents this weekend in Prague to explore new ideas at the intersection of journalism and open technology. Three is the magic number for Newscoop 3.5.3, with 33 bug fixes ranging from the powerful search interface, to the wysiwyg article edit screen, to the installation process itself.

Check out an online demo of Newscoop or download now for free.

What’s new?

Some great community bug reports led to a detailed examination and improvement of the way Newscoop handles lists of articles. A couple of issues relating to user permissions and selecting articles have been dealt with, but perhaps the most significant improvement relates to searching for content in translated issues. Search now pulls up all content from translated issues meaning it’s easier than ever before to manage multilingual sites.

Improvements to the TinyMCE editor performance mean article creation is now more stable. Reported bugs involving the HTML button unnecessarily cleaning code for embedded objects and an occasional failure to save content were identified and zapped. Upgrading also no longer creates an occasional error in the TinyMCE editor.

Newspapers interested in freemium, paywall or enhanced content models will be pleased to know ReCaptcha for Newscoop’s subscription feature is now implemented - bye-bye bots! Blog listings (blogs, entries, comments) were also improved with new pagination and a link to blog entries list added to make finding content easier.

Finally, install, login, backup and restore - the cornerstones of your system engineer’s happiness - all continue to be improved in an effort to make everything on the backend safer and easier to use.

Too busy to upgrade?
