Lots going on in our Prague headquarters over the last two weeks with many people stopping by for super productive meetings on everything from release cycles to the future of televisual broadcast. Plus, we even found time to improve our software further with two update releases. Lucky that our team of partners and developers continues to grow then!

Software Updates

We’ve released two important updates to Newscoop and Airtime recently. The newest was Airtime 1.6.1 which made several security updates and stability improvements. Newscoop 3.5.1 came out a couple of weeks ago and provided security updates and bug fixes. Users of both software packages are strongly encouraged to upgrade. If you need any help, our developers are on hand in our forums.

(Don’t forget, we can take care of all of your installation and upgrading tasks. Take a look at what we offer in our Services section and let us take care of the behind-the-scenes stuff.)

Superdesk

Media Helping Media founder and journalism visionary David Brewer visited our Prague offices last week to discuss one of our newest projects, Superdesk. David is on board to help us develop a total newsroom production system for publishers and broadcasters. He said: “It's a dream come true for me. A group of international developers working on a free, open-source tool designed to power a converged newsroom concept based on a centralised superdesk.”

Read more about David’s visit and our plans for Superdesk on his blog.

Website Improvements

Last week the team were working hard on sourcefabric.org and added a new Resources section, a new Community area, improved our software download pages and added various testimonials from the people we work with all over the world. Please stop by to take a look and feel free to let us know if you have any comments.

Developer Spotlight

This week the dev team had more discussions on the Newscoop technology platform and, by the end, came full circle. The best way forward, they decided, is to refactor Newscoop on Zend and Doctrine. There are many angles to this issue; a blogpost next week will explain the ins and outs of the decision. They’re planning on starting the refactoring immediately after the Newscoop 3.5.2 release in mid-March.

Specifications for a number of features in the April Airtime release are being worked on now too, many of which have come directly from activity and reports in the forums. The feedback has been very positive so far, so thanks to everyone for their comments!

Finally, welcome to Mihai Nistor, who joins the Newscoop development team in Cluj!
