The Mobile (JQuery) - a new template pack for news organisations

Straight down to business! Newscoop 3.5.3 came out last week and has been very positively received and we’re sure Airtime 1.8.2, which comes out tomorrow, will be the same amongst professional news organisations. It’s been a busy fortnight for the developers, so good job we have some new recruits to help them out. We’ll say hello to them and look at an exciting new Sourcefabric mobile venture, all in this edition of our newsletter.

Airtime update out tomorrow

Wednesday May 25th will welcome Airtime 1.8.2, the newest version of our radio software. This latest update was brought about by some issues users had with installing and upgrading airtime. The Airtime install now automatically detects if you should upgrade or install and takes the appropriate action.

The developers of course took this as a great excuse to add in some new features and improvements too, including one great change allowing users to download audio files from the search and show screens. Oh, and did we forget to mention Airtime now runs on Ubuntu 11.04? One more reason to upgrade!

Visit the Airtime homepage for an online demo, download links and much more.

(The Airtime manual has been updated too! Now with added chapters on server backup, Mixxx integration and an easy Get Started section for beginners!)

Newscoop templates go mobile

One of the Newscoop features that web designers love us for is Browser Detection. With this feature, your website checks to see what browser is viewing the site and then optimises the content accordingly. Our new template called The Mobile was developed with exactly this in mind.

Designed for smartphones and tablets using the touch-optimized web framework jQuery Mobile, it runs parallel to your existing Newscoop site’s design and adapts gracefully to a range of devices.Check out an online demo of The Mobile and the rest of our growing portfolio of free, professional templates for newsites at sourcefabric.org.

New release for Newscoop

Here at Sourcefabric we believe that a stable, growing platform is the key to any open source project’s success. Allow us then to introduce you to the next installment of the Newscoop family, version 3.5.3.Released last week, it’s ready to be downloaded free right away, and is the product of some great community bug reports and suggestions.

Improvements include article lists, article editing, content search, blogs, install, login, backup and restore, meaning it’s an update you really shouldn’t miss.

Meet the team

This week we catch up and say hello to three new developers who have joined the team in recent times. Mihai Balaceanu and Gabriel Nistor have been coding for weeks in our community space in Cluj, Romania while Erdem Ozan Özbek will join the Prague team next month. All will work on Newscoop and - shhh! - the top secret Superdesk project. We’re really glad to have them join us and bring some more great skills and experience to the dev department.

Developer spotlight

Two releases in two weeks is always going to be busy. However, there’s no rest for the wicked. As you read this, the Cluj and Prague developer teams are having a week of collaborative planning and coding, setting out exciting roadmaps for the versions and months ahead. Exciting times... as always, follow us on Facebook and track us on Twitter to get the story first!
