Open source solutions for professional publishing

Books on Demand

More and more people are reading on the go, using a smartphone, tablet or e-reader. Dr. Florian Geuppert, CEO

More and more enterprises are discovering that the cost of open source development is a fraction of the cost of building from scratch, even when they need a custom solution. A new publishing tool from Books on Demand (BoD) is a perfect example.

The challenge

Books on Demand (BoD), the leading provider of self-publishing and print-on-demand services in Germany, wanted to address the growing market of readers on the go. According to the iDate DigiWorld Yearbook, the e-book market in Germany will be worth EUR 389m in 2015 — more than double its value in 2012. The e-book market already accounts for 4.5% of book sales in developed countries.

"Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for authors to publish short works in digital format quickly and professionally," BoD CEO Florian Geuppert told German publishing industry site Literaturcafe.de.

The solution

Sourcefabric helped BoD create a new online authoring and publishing tool called easyEditor. Built on the Sourcefabric Booktype software, easyEditor gives BoD customers an elegant, intuitive authoring environment and seamless publishing to all major online platforms.

EasyEditor is designed to create e-books of up to 144,000 characters (about 80 pages). The briefer format is ideal for short stories, serial novels or journalism — the kind of content mobile readers prefer.

With easyEditor, authors can even change the content and the price of their e-books for no additional charge — even after those books have been published. Such changes are implemented within just 48 hours.

"EasyEditor is a clever solution that makes sure the author doesn’t run into any nasty surprises when formatting." says Literaturcafe.de

The result

This open source solution is good for BoD's bottom line because it gives them total ownership of the code with no licensing fees.

And because easyEditor is built on Booktype, a tested and reliable technology stack, the cost of development was a fraction of what BoD would have spent building it from scratch.

We're grateful to BoD for giving us this opportunity to demonstrate how our free and open software can help them better serve their market. We'd like to do the same for you.
