Newscoop 3.6 and Airtime 1.9 Release Candidates

Newscoop 3.6 and Airtime 1.9 Release Candi
Newscoop 3.6 and Airtime 1.9 Release Candi

In software release cycle terms, a release candidate is the bridge between a beta and a final release. It's the moment we say we think this is ready, but we're happy to be proved wrong. In other words, the core functionality and stability is all there (without 'blocker' bugs), but we want your help to push the newest versions to their limits. That can mean testing on various servers, with different operating systems and browsers and putting the new features through their paces with stress tests.

Today, we're happy to announce the release of Airtime 1.9 RC1 and Newscoop 3.6 RC1!

Airtime 1.9 RC1

There's lots to get excited about in the new Airtime release, including:

  • New file storage system (human readable file structure, 'watched' folders, magic file synchronisation)
  • Output to Shoutcast
  • A new "Program Manager" role.
  • Frontend widgets are much easier to use and can be modified with CSS
  • Graceful recovery from reboot and no more rebooting after install
  • All in all, 150+ improvements, fixes and new features

So, get testing! You can log on to our cutting edge test install by visiting airtime-dev.sourcefabric.org (user: admin | password: admin). For the brave and the bold, the install guide is here if you want to test that side of things.

See below if you run into any bugs and want to report them (please do!)

Newscoop 3.6 RC1

Plenty of exciting new features here too.

  • Powered-up geolocation tools and new dynamic maps function
  • Theme management - download themes and switch looks from with Newscoop's back end
  • Vastly improved user permissions and management
  • Pluggable comments system
  • Import from WordPress or NewsML

Install from either GIT or tarball, instructions on the developer's wiki.
