At the end of January, our friends at Books on Demand debuted a new online authoring and publishing tool called E-Short. Built on the Sourcefabric Booktype software, E-Short gives BoD customers an elegant, intuitive authoring environment and seamless publishing to all major online platforms.

E-Short is the result of a long cooperation between Books on Demand and Sourcefabric. Tailor-made for BoD, the tool is powered by our free and open software. Sourcefabric believes open code means free speech. It also means smart business.

Giving authors what they need

E-short is designed to create e-books of up to 144,000 characters (about 80 pages). The briefer format is ideal for short stories, serial novels or journalism. E-Short will give BoD further leverage in a growing market. According to the iDate DigiWorld Yearbook 2012, the e-book market in Germany will be worth EUR 389m in 2015 — more than double its value in 2012.

BoD is the first in Germany to offer an intuitive, browser-based editing environment that exports to all other major e-publishing formats. Plus, unlike other authoring and editing tools, E-Short lets users select a clear, legible CSS design with just one click.

Self publishing solutions for business

This open source solution is good for BoD's bottom line because it gives them total ownership of the code with no licensing fees. And because E-Short is built on Booktype, a tested and reliable technology stack, the cost of development was a fraction of what BoD would have spent building it from scratch.

We're grateful to BoD for giving us this opportunity to demonstrate how our free and open software can help them better serve their market. We'd like to do the same for you. Contact us to learn how we can help. Open source is open for business.
